Chapter Ten

I told you she has the hots for you,” Nicole said, the sounds of falling pins and balls hitting the lane keeping her words from reaching anyone other than the one she intended.

Laurel glanced quickly at the short blonde from the Public Works team, then back to the redhead she found far more interesting. “She likes the way I bowl. Besides, she’s not my type.”

“And what is your type?”

You. “What’s yours?”

Nicole smiled. “I asked you first.”

“Laurel, you’re holding us up,” Sandy said from her chair several feet away.

“Saved by the bowling ball.” Laurel gave Nicole a wink before stepping up onto the lane. Distracted by her thoughts, she missed the headpin on the first roll, then settled down and picked up the spare. “There goes my chance for a 180 game,” she said as she returned to Nicole’s side.

“I’d be happy to get 120,” Nicole said. “So?”

Laurel smiled, pretending to watch her sister bowl, though she could see Nicole with her peripheral vision. “What do you think my type is?”

“Oh, no, you don’t.”

“It was worth a shot. You’re up.”

“Saved by the bowling ball again,” Nicole said. “Nice strike, Sandy.”

“Yeah, nice strike,” Laurel said as her sister approached.

“Like I believe you were watching me,” Sandy said. “I could have thrown two gutter balls for all you knew.”

“Nicole and I were talking. You don’t always watch me take my turns.”

“I’m not the one you want watching you, and don’t give me that ‘just friends’ crap.” Sandy leaned over to retrieve her glass from the counter behind the chairs.

“I don’t want to talk about it,” Laurel said. “What are you drinking?”

Sandy wiggled the glass in her hand. “Club soda and cranberry juice, Mother Hen. I didn’t want to listen to you if I had a beer.”

“Does this mean you’ve changed your mind?”

“It means I don’t want to be nagged tonight. It’ll all be over by this time Thursday, and I don’t want to talk about it anymore.”

Laurel shook her head. “I’m not trying to nag you,” she said, knowing the subject was closed when Nicole approached. “You almost had that spare.”

“I wish I didn’t hook so much,” Nicole said, looking from Laurel to Sandy and back again. “Um, I think I’ll go get a drink.”

“You’re not interrupting anything,” Sandy said, setting her drink on the counter. “Excuse me.” She walked off toward the ladies room.

“You okay?” Nicole asked quietly.

Laurel sighed and reached for her drink. “I will be.”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“Not now.”

“If you need to…”

Feeling the tender touch on her forearm, Laurel looked at Nicole and smiled. “I know. That goes both ways.”

“Are you going to say anything to me?” Sandy asked.

Laurel continued to look straight ahead as she drove through the business district. “What do you want me to say?”

“I don’t know, but I hate this silent treatment.”

Slowing for a traffic light, Laurel sighed and flexed her hands on the steering wheel. “You know how I feel about this.”

“I told you I could drive myself.”

“And I told you that I wouldn’t let you go through this alone.
